Museums on Manitoulin Island
Most every small community and first nation across Manitoulin Island is bathed in history and this past can be viewed through the various museums. There is also the Sheguindah National Historic Site of Canada (Archeological site) where tours can be arranged via the Centennial Museum in the summer months

Come and catch a glimpse of the past at our museum! The life and times of pioneers are brought to life in the barn, sugar shack and reconstructed log homes.

Sheguiandah National Historic Site of Canada
The main feature of the site is a quartzite knoll containing artifacts spanning 9000 years of occupation, dating from the Paleoindian Period to the Middle Woodland Period. The site extends to the base of the knoll on all sides, including the modern village of Sheguiandah. Official recognition refers to the quartzite knoll on all sides, with additional protected areas to the north and northeast, including the modern village of Sheguiandah.

Assiginack Museum is nestled in the village of Manitowaning, Ontario, Canada. We have a beautiful green area for you to stroll through as you enjoy a pioneer home, blacksmith shop, school house and a barn.

South Baymouth Museum and Schoolhouse
Our museum traces the history of Tehkummah Township, Michael's Bay (one of Ontario's ghost towns), Michael's Bay, and the development of South Baymouth.

Pioneer Museum Mindemoya
The Central Manitoulin Historical Society welcomes visitors to the 19th century at the Pioneer Museum. The Pioneer Park is located adjacent to the Central Manitoulin Welcome Centre at 2207 ON-551, Mindemoya, ON. Pioneer Park Museum preserves artifacts and history of the pioneer life in Central Manitoulin and many of the exhibits feature the history and culture of farming, fishing and lumbering in our area.

Old Mill Heritage Centre

The Old Mill Heritage Centre, used to be a pulp mill providing paper for Sears Roebuck catalogues in Wisconsin. Now it houses an Art Gallery and has a Multi-Media centre with different themes from Agriculture, Military, early sawmills, commercial shipping and fishing, life in Billings Township and of course the story of the Daniel Dodge Tragedy.

Ojibway Cultural Centre

The Ojibwe Cultural Foundation was established in 1974 to preserve and revitalize the language, culture, arts, spirituality, and traditions of the Anishinaabe people of Mnidoo Mnising (Manitoulin Island) and surrounding areas. We dedicate ourselves to nurturing the expression of Anishinaabe culture in all forms, so our art, language, stories, songs, and teachings flourish now and remain strong for future generations.

Gore Bay Museum
The Gore Bay Museum building is part of the Gore Bay court complex and served as the Manitoulin District Jail and jailer's residence until 1945. It is one of the few remaining Ontario jails which has retained many of its original features. It has now been converted into a museum that displays the history of local early settlers.

Ojibwe Spirit Horses

Wiikwemkoong First Nation on Manitoulin Island is now home to a small herd of Ojibwe Spirit Horses, also known as Lac La Croix Indigenous Ponies, a rare and endangered Indigenous horse breed that has a deep cultural and spiritual significance to the Ojibwe people. These horses, considered sacred and possessing healing properties, arrived in Wiikwemkoong in June 2024 as part of a program aimed at their preservation and for their use in healing and traditional practices within the community.

The ruins of the Holy Cross Mission in Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory on Manitoulin Island are a site associated with a former Indian Residential School and a significant location for remembrance and reconciliation efforts. While the Holy Cross Mission was established as a residence for priests, it also served as a residential school, and its ruins are now central to a community effort to create a monument honoring survivors and victims of the Indian Residential School System
